Hotstar Ad Mute is a Chrome extension that automatically mutes advertisement audio during supported Hotstar and JioHotstar live streams, then restores your audio when live content resumes.
How does Hotstar Ad Mute work?
It watches for supported advertisement signals produced by the Hotstar page while a live stream plays. When it recognises an ad break, it mutes the tab, and when the break ends it restores the audio state you had before.
Does Hotstar Ad Mute block advertisements?
No. It is not an ad blocker. The advertisements still load and play. The only thing it changes is whether the tab's audio is muted during a detected ad break.
Does it remove Hotstar ads?
No. It does not remove, skip, or hide ads, and it does not alter the video or bypass subscriptions or paywalls. You will still see the advertisement; you just won't hear it.
Using it
Does it mute the entire live stream?
No. It mutes only while an advertisement break is detected. The rest of the time, your audio is left exactly as you set it.
Does audio automatically return after an ad?
Yes. When live content resumes, the extension restores the audio state the tab had before the ad. If it cannot tell when an ad has ended, a safety timer restores your audio within a bounded time.
What if I had already muted the tab myself?
It remembers your state from before the ad and puts it back. A tab you had muted yourself stays muted after the ad break rather than being unmuted.
Does it work with live cricket?
Yes, live cricket is the main use case. It is designed for supported live streams and advertisement formats, so results can vary between streams and with changes on Hotstar's side.
Does it work with JioHotstar?
Yes. It runs on www.hotstar.com and www.jiohotstar.com, so it is designed to work wherever the supported live streams are available on either site.
Does it work automatically?
Yes. There is nothing to click during a stream. You can turn automatic muting off in the extension's settings if you ever want to pause it.
Do I need to refresh Hotstar?
No. Hotstar Ad Mute is designed to attach to Hotstar tabs that were already open when it was installed or updated, so a manual refresh should not be needed.
Will it work with every Hotstar advertisement?
Not necessarily. It is designed for supported live streams and advertisement formats. Hotstar can change its player or its advertising system at any time, and some ad types may not be detected.
Does it work in several tabs at once?
Yes. Each Hotstar or JioHotstar tab is handled independently, so one tab's ad break does not mute another.
Privacy
Do I need an account?
No. There is no account, sign-up, or login for Hotstar Ad Mute.
Does it collect my browsing history?

Does it send my Hotstar data to a server?

Installing and removing
Which browser does it support?
Google Chrome, version 111 or later. Other Chromium-based browsers that install extensions from the Chrome Web Store may work, but they are not the supported target.
How do I install Hotstar Ad Mute?
Open the Hotstar Ad Mute listing on the Chrome Web Store, click Add to Chrome, and confirm the installation. Then open a supported live stream on Hotstar or JioHotstar.
How do I uninstall it?
Right-click the extension's icon in Chrome and choose Remove from Chrome, or open Chrome's extensions page and remove it there. Uninstalling also removes the settings Chrome stored for it.
Troubleshooting
The extension did not mute an ad. What should I check?
Confirm the extension is enabled, Automatic ad muting is on in its settings, you are on a live stream at www.hotstar.com or www.jiohotstar.com, and Chrome and the extension are up to date. If it still misses a particular ad, that format may not be supported yet.
The audio stayed muted after an ad. Why?
Normally audio returns when live content resumes, and a safety timer restores it if the end of the ad is unclear. If you muted the tab yourself before the ad, the extension keeps it muted by design. You can unmute the tab from Chrome as usual.
It stopped working after a Hotstar update. What now?
Hotstar Ad Mute relies on signals from Hotstar's web player. If Hotstar changes them, detection can be affected until the extension is updated. Chrome updates extensions automatically, so a fix will arrive through the Chrome Web Store.
