How Hotstar Ad Mute Works

A closer look at what the extension does from the start of an ad break to the moment your audio comes back, and what it deliberately leaves alone.

From Ad Break to Restored Audio

Hotstar Ad Mute runs quietly on Hotstar and JioHotstar pages. Nothing needs to be opened or clicked while you watch. This is the sequence it follows.

1. A supported live stream is open

The extension only activates on www.hotstar.com and www.jiohotstar.com. It is designed to attach to Hotstar tabs that were already open when it was installed or updated, so you can keep watching rather than starting over.

2. The page produces advertisement signals

When an ad break starts, the Hotstar player and page make requests and emit signals as part of normal playback. Hotstar Ad Mute uses supported page and network signals to identify advertisement playback. These are not an official Hotstar API. They are simply what the page does, which means they can change.

3. The extension recognises a supported ad signal

Only signals the extension knows how to read are acted on. Anything it doesn't recognise is ignored, and banner or overlay placements that sit on top of live play are designed not to trigger a mute.

4. It estimates how long the break should last

When a signal carries a duration, the extension uses it to know roughly how long to expect the ad to run. When a signal is clearly an ad but gives no trustworthy duration, it uses a cautious fallback and keeps watching for further signals.

5. The tab is muted

The extension mutes the tab's audio. The video keeps playing and is never modified, blocked, or redirected.

6. Audio is restored when live content resumes

When the break ends, the tab returns to the audio state it had immediately before the ad.

Back-to-Back Ads in One Break

Ad breaks on live streams are often several ads in a row. Hotstar Ad Mute treats consecutive ads in the same break as one continuous mute, with a short grace period at the end to catch a trailing ad. That avoids the sound popping back for a second between ads.

Your Previous Audio State Is Preserved

The extension doesn't simply "unmute" at the end. It remembers whether your tab was already muted before the ad began and puts it back that way. If you had muted the tab yourself, it stays muted after the ad break.

Safety Restore

Detection is never perfect, so the extension is built to fail toward sound rather than silence. If it can't tell when an ad has ended, a safety watchdog restores your audio within a bounded time instead of leaving the tab muted indefinitely. Each Hotstar tab is handled independently, so a muted stream in one tab doesn't affect another.

What Hotstar Ad Mute Does Not Do

  • It does not block, skip, hide, or remove advertisements.
  • It does not modify, block, or redirect the video or its stream.
  • It does not bypass subscriptions, paywalls, or access controls.
  • It does not guarantee that every advertisement will be detected.

Where It Works, and Where It May Not

The extension is designed for supported live streams and advertisement formats on Hotstar and JioHotstar, including live cricket. It is built for Google Chrome 111 or later. Because it depends on signals Hotstar's web player exposes, a change to the player or the advertising system can affect detection until the extension is updated. Video-on-demand content, and ad formats the extension doesn't recognise, may not be muted.
